Defending Champions – Atlético Madrid

La Liga heavyweights Atlético Madrid will be back in the 2012/2013 Europa League and at the moment sit on the second line of betting behind Inter Milan, Liverpool and Tottenham. This will sit well with the famous Spanish side as it removes some of the pressure associated with being defending champions.

Featuring Turkish superstar Arda Turan, Spanish international striker Adrian and the honorary ‘King of the Europa League’ Falcao, Atlético have some serious attacking weapons at their disposal. Falcao himself broke the record last season (that he himself held previously) for most goals in a Europa League season. Atlético Madrid are also on a 13 match undefeated streak in the Europa League, going through last season’s entire league undefeated.

They may not have the names or the exposure of the more fancied clubs in Liverpool and Inter but they have the experience at the business end of this tournament and a team galvanised by their recent success and with many players backing up from last season including the sensational Columbian Falcao they will not only threaten, they really should be considered favourites. With a swag of international players at their disposal including names like Diego Godín, Tiago, Álvaro Domínguez Soto and Turkish hero Emre Belözoğlu they have the talent, the experience and the results on the board to indicate that they will be a real presence in the upcoming Europa League.
